Entrepreneurship is Self-Improvement

Like getting into shape or learning a new skill, the path to becoming an entrepreneur is made up of behavioral and cultural changes.

Lately, I've been equating the path to entrepreneurship with self-improvement activities like fitness or learning a skill, and apparently, I'm not alone.

What I mean is that "the act" of becoming an entrepreneur is rooted in the type of self-belief that suggests we have the ability to go from where we are to where we need to be.

Behind not starting a business are the same reasons for not starting a diet or learning a new subject, and not fear of failure, which is the most attributed cause.

We're not afraid of becoming good at something, like playing an instrument or speaking a second language.

It has to do with a lack of vision for ourselves.

Finding Vision

Where you are

We must articulate our unique frustration, something that will trigger the decision to make changes.

Where you need to be

We must define the image of what success looks like to us, something to strive for, something to become.

We need to know that things aren't just possible but possible for us.

We might need to see a testimonial by someone who transformed into their desired shape to believe that to be possible. We might need to see a success story from a student getting their dream job after graduating. We might simply need to see in order to believe.

The same is true for entrepreneurial endeavors.

But now that we know it to be possible, and that it represents a significant change in our lives, we can't expect it to come easy.

Though, it kinda is.

Small tweaks lead to giant peaks

Still using fitness as a reference, exercise alone won't get us into shape, we also have to get our diet right. In learning a skill we'll have to manage time properly and practice incrementally.

These seemingly standalone activities are in fact made up of small to medium sub-activities that, if not executed intentionally, will prevent us from achieving our desired results.

It's small, incremental, and consistent adjustments that produce compound effects.

Now that we have made the decision to embark on this journey, we'll need a bridge and a roadmap to get us from where we are to where we need to be.

That, however, is for another time.

TLDR

  • Entrepreneurship is a form of self-improvement

  • Lack of vision prevents us from making moves

  • Our path is unclear because we haven't defined a destination

  • Doing small things consistently produces compound results
